Sustainable IT: How Green Cloud Architecture Cuts Both Carbon and Costs

Sustainability in IT is no longer a PR exercise. India's data center industry is projected to grow 3x by 2028 — and enterprises that architect for efficiency today will have both lower cloud bills and stronger ESG narratives tomorrow.

The four pillars of green cloud

  1. Right-sizing: most enterprises over-provision by 40–70%. We routinely cut bills 35% by rescaling instances and switching to ARM (Graviton, Azure Ampere).
  2. Region selection: running workloads in the region closest to your users reduces data transfer energy and latency simultaneously.
  3. Serverless-first: pay-per-request models (Lambda, Cloud Run) mean servers aren't idling when traffic is low — the single biggest source of wasted energy in cloud computing.
  4. Caching aggressively: every request served from cache instead of a database query is energy saved. Cloudflare, Fastly, and Varnish are all net-positive on the sustainability ledger.

Real numbers from a recent migration

Client: 200-vCPU workload on AWS Mumbai. Before and after our green-architecture audit:

  • Monthly cloud spend: ₹9.2L → ₹5.8L (-37%)
  • Estimated annual CO₂ saved: 11.4 tons (equivalent to ~480 trees)
  • P99 API latency: 340ms → 180ms

Every rupee saved on compute is also a gram of CO₂ not emitted. Sustainable IT isn't altruism — it's engineering rigor.
